TROY — Troy High School students are getting all dolled up for this year’s performance of Abe Burrows, Jo Swerling and Frank Loesser’s musical “Guys and Dolls.” The musical is based on two short stories, “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and “Blood Pressure,” both by Damon Runyon.

“The music and story of this musical are well known, so a person of any age can enjoy it,” said Erik Strope, musical director.

“Guys and Dolls” is the classic story of a gambler, Sky Masterson, who tries to entice a Salvation Army missionary, Sarah Brown, to fall in love with him in order to win a bet. All the while Nathan Detroit, a fellow gambler, comes to Masterson for cash to set up the largest floating craps game in their town, a fictional version of New York City. Meanwhile, Detroit’s girlfriend, Adelaide, a nightclub singer, tries to convince Detroit to marry her after an elongated 14-year engagement.

“Guys and Dolls” runs at 7 p.m. Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18 and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 19.

“I love this musical because the characters are so unique,” said junior Charlotte Snee, who plays the role of Adelaide. “She is one of the first female characters written for comic relief, so she is so fun to play.”

Senior Caroline Conard, Thespian Troupe 1553 president, agrees.

“There is an interesting dynamic between characters. There is always something going on with them … even the extras have personalities,” said Conard, who also is the State Thespian Officer and plays Agathe in the musical.

Tickets are sold at the door for $8 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.
