MIAMI COUNTY — The flannel was flying at the horse arena Friday morning as Miami County horse clubs competed against each other in some good, old-fashion horse play.

“The Galloping Gachos” were successful in the wheel-barrow races, selecting their daintiest members to be tossed into the metal bin and trucked down the arena.

President of the club Victoria Hager, 16, said she enjoys the “Super Stars” fun day to kick off the week-long fair events.

“It’s fun to spend time with other clubs and something that doesn’t involve the horses,” Hager said. “It’s fun to compete in the arena as a whole group of kids without the pressure of winning.”

Yet, Hager was already tapped as a winner earlier this month when she placed first with her horse Leo at the Ohio State Fair for Western Showmanship.

“It was awesome,” she said. “It took me by surprise, but it was nice to be recognized for all the hard work.”

Courtney Webb, 12, is experiencing her first year as a horse exhibitor, showing Goldie this week, and is a member of the Galloping Gachos.

“I thought it would be fun to try it out and be with other people who like horses,” she said.

Webb said she was looking forward to competing in the “Pony Express” game where contestants ride stick horses around the arena to deliver the “mail bag” to its final destination.

Garrett Supinger, 16, was part of the driving force to win the wheelbarrow race game. Supinger said he looks forward to the fair each year to ride his horses in several events — and hanging out with his friends.

Chloe Thompson, 12, said she enjoys playing all the “Super Star” games during the fun day at the arena.

Thompson recently moved to the area and said it was through 4-H and her horse club that she met new friends.

Thompson shared that she is looking forward to showing Lexi and Indie this week, but also is looking forward to watching others show their horses as well.

“I just like seeing other people’s techniques and the skills they use on their horses,” she said. “It’s fun to watch others show and see what works best for them and maybe try it with my horses.”
