Settlers
were attracted to the Laura area in scenic
southwestern Miami County more than a half century
before anyone got around to formally creating a
village in 1852, it wasn't until 1892 that Laura
actually was incorporated.
Like
many areas in Miami County, the railroad spurred
growth in the early 1880s. That included the
arrival of the town's first saloon -- an
establishment that was destroyed by ax-wielding
temperance workers. That unpleasant experience
discouraged any other such ventures in the
following years.
Over
the years, Laura's population has stayed small. Its
residents enjoy living in a small town while taking
part in the schools, emergency services and other
events with other nearby communities in Union
Township.
