Covington duo leading college teams

A pair of former Covington High School softball players are making immediate impacts for their college softball teams.

Morgan Arbogast and Cassidy Cain both are freshmen at Cedarville University and Mount Vernon Nazarene University, respectively. Despite their youth, both are quickly emerging as team leaders.

Arbogast, a pitcher, leads her team in nearly every statistical category this season. She’s tops in appearances (18), games started (15), complete games (12), innings pitched (106.1) and strikeouts (56). She’s 7-9 this season with a 2.83 earned run average, the lowest on the team. She also has recorded a save this season.

She’s also seeing plenty of playing time at first base for the Yellow Jackets. She’s played in 29 total games this season and is hitting .262 with eight runs batted in, a home run and three doubles.

Cain is third on the team in hitting at Mount Vernon Nazarene with a .308 batting average. She’s driven in nine runs with a home run and five doubles. She has started 31 games for the Cougars this season.

Trenton Wood

MOUNT VERNON — Wood, a Troy High School graduate, is a freshman pitcher and outfielder on the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team.

As a pitcher, Wood has appeared in eight games, starting five. He’s 4-2 with a 3.27 earned run average this season. He’s recorded 28 strikeouts, third on the team.

Overall, Wood has played in 23 games and started 18.

Reid Wynkoop

FINDLAY — Wynkoop, a Troy High School graduate, is a senior tennis players at the University of Findlay.

He is playing No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles for the Oilers. He’s 7-9 in singles action and 7-9 in doubles play this season.

Gracie Huffman

ATHENS — Huffman, a Troy High School graduate and freshman sprinter at Ohio University, recently took second place in the 400 (59.43 seconds) at the All-Ohio Track and Field Championships.

Huffman also was a member of the 4×400 relay team that took first place (4:01.99).

Jackie Siefring

ATHENS — Siefring, a Covington High School graduate and a sophomore on the Akron University track and field team, took first place (1:00.89) in the 400 hurdles at the All-Ohio Track and Field Championships.

Jon Osman

SPRINGFIELD — Osmon, a Troy High School graduate, is a junior distance runner at Wittenberg University.

Osmon recently took second place at the Wittenberg Tiger Invitational (4:30.08).
