SIDNEY — The Troy girls basketball team got its second shot at unbeaten, state-ranked Sidney Wednesday night — and for a half, the Trojans were competitive.
In the end, though, the Yellow Jackets (21-0, 9-0 Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division), ranked No. 3 in the state in the latest Division I poll, outscored the Trojans 36-14 in the second half to pull away for a 61-32 victory over Troy Wednesday in Sidney.
Sylvia Hudson scored all 11 of the Jackets’ first-quarter points, giving Sidney a slim 11-8 lead — but, more importantly, becoming Sidney’s all-time leading scorer in the process. She finished the game with 21 points and 15 rebounds and Celena Taborn added 28 points and 11 rebounds.
Bailey Dornbusch hit three 3-pointers and led the Trojans (9-11, 5-5 GWOC North) with nine points, Sierra Besecker added eight points and Kayla Niswonger and Taylor Stookey each scored four.
The Trojans will face the Tippecanoe Red Devils Saturday at Hobart Arena, part of Troy’s 100 years of basketball celebration.

SPRINGFIELD — The Tippecanoe Red Devils — who earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Division II sectional tournament at Tecumseh — were upset Wednesday night by Springfield Shawnee, who outscored the Devils 10-6 in the fourth quarter to steal a 45-44 victory at Shawnee in Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division play.
Shawnee (11-10, 3-7 CBC Kenton Trail) was the No. 6 seed in the tournament — and is in the Devils’ half of the bracket. The Braves face No. 9 Urbana in the first round but then would have to get past either No. 2 Carroll or No. 14 Belmont to get another shot at Tipp (16-5, 7-3 CBC Kenton Trail) in the sectional title game.
The Devils — who face No. 13 Greenon in the first round and No. 12 Greenville in the second — will travel to Troy Saturday to face the Trojans at Hobart Arena.
