MIAMI COUNTY — Matt Brumbaugh couldn’t have asked for a better senior year.

The Milton-Union first singles tennis player cruised through the regular season, winning an individual Southwestern Buckeye League championship — as did every other Bulldog on the team. Following that sweep, Brumbaugh teamed up wth sophomore brother Phillip Brumbaugh and reach the Division II state tournament in doubles, with the duo placing fourth.

And following the season he had, Matt Brumbaugh was given the highest honor by the Miami Valley Tennis Coaches Association, being named the All-Area Player of the Year in D-II.

Milton-Union coach Roger Davidson was also given the President’s Award as the team went 13-5 during the regular season — but went unbeaten in SWBL Buckeye Division play, sweeping the SWBL Tournament in the process.

Troy singles players Luke Oaks and Matt Schmitt also received special awards this season, with Oaks being given the Gold Senior Racquet Academic Award by the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association, and Schmitt being given the Silver Junior Racquet Academic Award for having GPAs of 3.75 or above.

* Division I

In addition to the OTCA academic award, Oaks was given the MVTC Academic Award and the Sportsmanship Award in addition to being named to the MVTCA All-Area first team. Shane Essick was named to the second team in singles, as was the doubles team of Connor Oaks and Elijah Sadler. The doubles team of Andrew Magoteaux and Nick Prus earned honorable mention.

Luke Oaks finished the season as the sectional runner-up but lost in the district quarterfinal. The senior graduates as the most recent Trojan state qualifier, accomplishing that feat as a junior. Essick finished third in the sectional and the team of Connor Oaks and Sadler finished fourth, with both falling at the district tournament.

Tippecanoe’s Michael Keller was named to the MVTCA All-Area second team and earned the Academic Award, Joe Keller was named third team in singles and Phillip Bullard was given honorable mention in singles.

Michael and Joe Keller teamed up in the postseason to win a sectional championship but fell at the district level.

* Division II

In addition to his MVTCA Player of the Year award, Milton-Union’s Matt Brumbaugh was named to the All-Area first team in singles, while Philip Brumbaugh was named to the second team in singles and the doubles team of Logan Dickison and Luke Ferguson was also named to the second team. The doubles team of Caleb Vincent and Trey Barnes was given honorable mention.

The Brumbaughs won the sectional title as a doubles team and finished as district runners-up — but that wasn’t the end. The duo placed fourth at the state tournament, the best finish ever by any Bulldog tennis players. Dickison and Ferguson, as well as Vincent as a singles players, all placed at the sectional as well but were ousted at the district level.

Lehman’s doubles team of Dylan Sherman and Nick Earhart was named to the MVTCA second team, Sam Dean was named third team in singles and Josh and Griffin West were given honorable mention.
