TROY — With all three singles matches going three sets, the final score was not indicative of how close the match was.
But in the end, Butler swept them all regardless.
The Troy tennis team — the two-time defending division champion — fought tooth and nail against the rival Aviators on Senior Night Monday, but in the end Butler was able to claim victory at all five spots, winning 5-0 to seal the Greater Western Ohio Conference American North Division championship.
“Butler played a great match to win 5-0 and win the GWOC North Division,” Troy tennis coach Mark Goldner said. “It was a disappointing team loss.”
But it was also a hard-fought one.
All three of Troy’s seniors — Hannah Essick, Maggie Hennessy and Ashley Bruns — took their matches the distance on the afternoon at singles.
At first singles, Essick battled back after dropping the first set to force a third set — one that went all the way to a tiebreaker. In the end, though, Madison Peyton held off Essick for a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5) victory.
At both second and third singles, the Trojans won the first set but could not close out the matches. At second, Hennessy lost to Allison Baker 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and at third, Bruns won a first-set tiebreaker but had nothing left for the next two, falling to Xia Lin 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-0.
At first doubles, Katie Sherrick and Hailey Taylor lost to Jenna Albezreh and Ashley Hess 6-2, 6-2. At second doubles, Jackie Fulker and Emma Kazmaier lost to Rachel Burton and Hannah Scarpelli 6-2, 6-3.
With the loss, Troy fell to 14-4, 9-1 and second place in the GWOC American North, while Butler finished 10-0 in division play and is 15-3 overall. The Trojans hosted Tecumseh Tuesday and travel to Miamisburg Wednesday before playing in the gold flight of the GWOC Tournament Thursday at Centerville.
TIPP CITY — Tippecanoe closed out the home portion of its schedule on Monday by sweeping Celina, winning 5-0 to improve to 15-5 on the year.

At first doubles, Ladia Coning and Alyssa Stewart won 6-2, 6-4. At second doubles, Anna Kueterman and Claire Wint won 6-3, 0-6, 6-3.
Tippecanoe finished the regular season Tuesday at Wayne.
