GREENVILLE — Turtle Creek hasn’t been friendly to the Troy boys golf team in recent years.

Thursday, the Trojans weren’t friendly to it.

Sophomore Holden Scribner was individual medalist and junior Nate Uhlenbrock posted a top-five finish, leading Troy to a team victory at the Greenville Invitational Thursday with a total round of 313 — the first victory of the season for both the Trojans and for Scribner.

“This was something a long time in the making,” Troy boys golf coach Mark Evilsizor said. “We’ve struggled at Turtle Creek the past few seasons. It’s kind of been one of our nemesis courses recently. But today, we slayed the dragon.

“The kids were happy to play well there. Good things can happen when you post four good scores.”

The Trojans won by 16 strokes, with Amherst Steel finishing second with 329. Beavercreek was third with 330.

“It was great to beat Beavercreek, who is one of our local rivals in the postseason,” Evilsizor said. “It’s a testament to the kids. They hung in there and grinded it out today.”

Scribner, who was second individually both at the Pre-Greater Western Ohio Conference and the Homan Memorial this season, got over the hump by shooting 75 to pick up his first tournament victory of the season. Teammate Uhlenbrock was close behind with a 77.

“He had a little more motivation today because of how close he’s been this year,” Evilsizor said of Scribner. “He was determined to play well today, and he did. And what was interesting about Nate’s round, he maybe didn’t hit as many greens as he normally does, but he chipped in four times today. That’s outstanding.”

With that big edge in place, Austin Rank and Keaton Pfeiffer sealed the team win by shooting 80 and 81, respectively. Jack Johnston followed with an 87 and Ryan McClurg shot 89.

“Austin shot a 9-over 80 — and he had a nine on the par 4 10th,” Evilsizor said. “Five of that 9-over came on only one hole, so his score is misleading. He played really well, probably the best he’s played all year. And Keaton just struggled closing. He doubled nine and 18. But hopefully he turned the corner and can get there more consistently. He can get into the 70s, too.”

Tippecanoe was fifth with 366. Bradley Calhoun led the Red Devils with 81, Sam Fairbanks shot 87, Casey Abney shot 97, Noah Blake shot 101, Casey Tatum shot 103 and Zach Losey shot 106.

Covington was 11th with 445. Andrew Slusher shot 81, Dylan Lucas shot 112, Hunter Alexander shot 113, Jack Shell shot 139, Derek McCool shot 142 and Garrett Warner shot 179.

Bradford was 12th with 484. Alex Swabb shot 85, Hayden Dickserson shot 126, Isaiah Painter shot 131 and Eric Sanders shot 142.

Troy will host the Troy Invitational Monday at Troy Country Club.
