TROY — No rain, but plenty of moisture hanging in the air.
The annual Thomas Frydell Memorial Junior Tennis Tournament kicked off on a hot and humid Wednesday afternoon at Troy Community Park, with play in all of the singles brackets getting underway and setting up some interesting matchups on Thursday.
In the boys 18u bracket, Craig Manges defeated Noah Blake 6-2, 6-0 in a semifinal match, while Ben Holbrook defeated Justin Ayres 6-3, 6-2 in a first-round match. Holbrook will now face Jeremy Penick on Thursday morning in a semifinal match to decide who Manges will take in in the finals.
In the boys 16u bracket, Anoop Patel defeated Austin Glover 6-1, 6-2 in a semifinal match. On the other side of the bracket, Brandon Kreger defeated Nick Brumbaugh 6-3, 6-2 and Matt Yeager defeated Christian Blake 6-1, 6-1 in a pair of quarterfinal matches. Now Kreger and Yeager will meet in the semifinals, with Patel awaiting in the final.
In the boys 14u bracket, Kellen Glover defeated Wyatt Hench in the only three-set boys match of the day, winning 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (11-6). He will now face Nathan Kleptz in one semifinal match. And Jaden Fisher defeated Ryan Lachart 6-2, 6-3 and will face Sean Dippold in the other semifinal.
And in the boys 12u bracket, Noah Davis defeated Kaden Mathes 6-3, 6-0, while Deacon Blake advanced on a forfeit. Davis and Blake will now meet in the title match.
In a packed girls 18u bracket, Anna Manges defeated Katie Sherrick in the only girls three-setter on the day, winning her first-round match 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-7), and Jackie Fulker defeated Shelby Mathes 6-2, 1-0 (default). Fulker and Manges will now meet in a quarterfinal match, as will Ashley Wombold — who advanced past Hannah Fugate — and Julia Stefanko, who had a first-round bye. Meanwhile, Claire Larger defeated Hailey Taylor in one quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-2 and will face the winner between Fulker and Mangas, and Laura Bowen defeated Emma Kazmaier 6-0, 6-2 and will face the winner between Wombold and Stefanko.
And in the girls 14u bracket, Kit Woelke defeated Brianna Cardinal 6-1, 6-0 and will now face Shreaya Madireddy in a semifinal match. On the other side of the bracket, Mira Patel defeated Esha Patel 6-0, 6-0 and Amelia Zweizig defeated Leah Fraker 6-0, 6-0, with Mira Patel and Zweizig now set to meet in the other semifinal.
Singles play will resume again at 9 a.m. Thursday, with double play beginning at 1 p.m.
