KETTERING — Late in the first half Wednesday night, Troy’s momentum helped to put away the game’s only score.
The Trojan girls soccer team’s defense did the rest, blanking the host Fairmont Firebirds in a season-opening 1-0 victory in Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover play.
Sierra Besecker scored the goal in the closing moments of the first half on an assist from Kina Sekito.
“We were pressing forward at the end of the first half, and we knew if we kept the pressure on we would get one in,” Troy coach Michael Rasey said. “We forced a turnover, Kina spotted Sierra on the left wing and sent a great ball to her, and Sierra drove a ball far post. It was just a great shot.”
The Trojans (1-0) shut down Fairmont and star Harper Luczka from there, with Troy goalie Maddie Innes posting six saves to record a shutout.
“For the most part, we controlled possession,” Rasey said. “Fairmont is a very physical, very direct team, and they’ve got a player (Luczka) that, when she can get going, their team is very dangerous. But we had a great defensive game and great goaltending.
“It was one of those games where you’ve just got to grind it out to get the win, and I was proud of the way the girls battled.”
Troy faces another tough test Saturday on the road at inter-county rival Tippecanoe.
