WEST MILTON — Milton-Union softball coach Curt Schaefer was trying to have Claire Fetters issue a free pass.

Instead, the Bulldogs ended up making a heads-up play to close out another victory.

With the tying run on second base, one out and the No. 3 hitter up, Fetters intended to pitch around the batter — but the batter dove across the plate for an outside pitch and grounded into a very nontraditional double play to give Milton-Union a 4-3 win to open Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division play Wednesday.

“I was going to give her first base and set up a force everywhere. I told Claire to give her four unhittable pitches,” Schaefer said. “Instead she goes after an outside pitch and grounds to Ashley Smith at short. Ashley stared the runner back to second and threw to first for the out, the runner took off and (first baseman) Christian Heisey threw over to Katie Courtright at third for the double play.

“It was a very heads-up play by the girls. Ashley could have just thrown to first for the out, but instead she looked the runner at second back and we ended up getting a double play out of it. It was a nailbiter, a fight to the end, and it probably aged me 10 more years. But I was proud of the girls and glad to get the win.”

Much like in its season-opening win at Troy Tuesday, Milton-Union (2-0, 1-0 SWBL Buckeye) got most of it production in the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead. After Madison cut it to 3-1, Anna Wilson hit a solo homer in the fifth to make it 4-1 — which proved to be the game-winning run as Madison capitalized on some Bulldog errors in the top of the sixth with two runs.

“We had opportunities, had runners on again,” Schaefer said. “The girls have got to find ways to get them in so we don’t make games close like this.”

But, also like Tuesday, Fetters and the Bulldog defense held it down. Fetters allowed seven hits, walked none and gave up one earned run while striking out five.

“Claire threw another great game, kept us in the game, and Katie’s defense at third really won it for us. She played a great defensive game,” Schaefer said.

Ashley Smith was 2 for 3 with a double in the game, Chloe Smith doubled and had two RBIs and Taylor Jacobs hit a double.

Milton-Union hosts Piqua today, weather permitting.

• Postponements

MIAMI COUNTY — Seems the only thing that can slow down the Bethel Bees is the weather.

Miami East, meanwhile, has yet to get started thanks to that same weather.

Bethe’s baseball game against Cedarville was postponed on Wednesday due to wet field conditions from an overnight rain in addition to the threat of more rain. The Bees are currently 2-0 this season after a pair of run-rule victories on Monday and Tuesday. No makeup date was immediately announced.

Miami East’s baseball and softball games against Lehman were also postponed on Wednesday. The Viking baseball team has yet to play a game — its season-opening doubleheader on Saturday was rained/snowed out. The softball team, meanwhile, is currently 1-0. No makeup dates were set for those games, either.
