UNION CITY — Two days, two homers for Newton’s Laura Oaks.
One probably felt a little more clutch to her, though.
On Monday, the Newton softball team knocked off Lehman 3-2 at home on the strength of an eighth-inning walkoff home run by Oaks. Then on Tuesday, the Indians jumped out in front of Mississinawa Valley early and then put the game away with a whopping 13 runs between the fifth and sixth innings, routing the Blackhawks 19-4 in a Cross County Conference matchup.
Oaks was 2 for 4 in the game against Lehman, Megan Rutledge and Riley Schauer were both 2 for 4 and Laura Burden doubled. Erin Hixon got the win, striking out eight and giving up three hits.
Rutledge had two doubles and two triples against Mississinawa Valley and Oaks hit another home run as the Indians totaled 13 hits. Hixon got the win, striking out three in three innings of work, and Burden struck out two in three innings, as well.
Newton travels to Dixie Saturday for a doubleheader.
Covington 18, Anna 1
ANNA — Morgan Arbogast struck out seven and allowed one run, while Covington pounded out 18 hits Tuesday at Anna to win its season opener 18-1.
Jessica Dammeyer was 3 for 5, Tara Schaeffer doubled twice, Haley Adams was 2 for 3 with a double and Arbogast was 2 for 4 with a double to lead the Buccaneers (1-0). Morgan McReynolds was also 2 for 4 and Brooke Gostomsky was 2 for 3.
Covington (1-0) hosts Bethel Thursday.
ME 5, Tecumseh 4
NEW CARLISLE — Olivia Edgell hit a three-run homer, Rachel Hawkins got her first varsity win and Meagan Pettit picked up a save as Miami East (1-0) held on for a 5-4 victory over Tecumseh Monday.
Ellie Gearhart was 2 for 4 with a double, Sam Denlinger was 3 for 4 and Megan Caudill and Kris Bigelow each went 2 for 4 as the Vikings outhit the Arrows 13-9. Hawkins went the first five innings in her first varsity start, and Pettit pitched the final two to help Miami East hang on.
The Vikings host Lehman today.
Waynesburg (PA) 1
The Tippecanoe Red Devils put away their first victory of the season late on Sunday, scoring six in the bottom of the sixth inning to wrap up an 8-1 victory over Waynesburg (PA) in Tennessee.
Bri Eichbaum struck out nine to get the win, giving up six hits and one earned run. Eichbaum and Kaitlyn Stocker each drove in two runs, while Cassie Gingerich and Stephanie Kraska each had two hits.
Bradford 10, NB 1
BRADFORD — Bradford pounded out 14 hits in its opener on Monday against New Bremen, winning 10-1.
Freshman Olivia Hart was 3 for 4 with a triple, while Haley Patty, Brooke Dunlevy, Erika Hart, Kylie Miller and Brooke Brower all went 2 for 4. Tori Smith also added a triple. Patty got the win on the hill, striking out 10.
