TROY — Troy Post 43 faced Richmond (Ind.) Post 65 is a nine-inning contest Friday night — the night before the team left for the State Connie Mack Tourney — and pitching was coach Frosty Brown’s focus.

“We set a goal to get all the pitchers ready this week, and tonight we used four veteran hurlers to hold Richmond to just five hits and a pair of runs.”

Trenton Wood was credited with the win as he worked the middle three innings allowing just one hit and striking out three as Post 43 (27-11) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to win 5-2 — the team’s 10th straight victory.

Trailing 2-1 after four complete innings, Post 43’s batters were essentially get themselves out, according to Brown.

“Our pitch selection has been better, and we simply chased some marginal pitches earlier in the count,” he said.

However, in the bottom the sixth, the Post 43 hitters came alive. With one out, Evan Bowling singled to right, followed by a single by Greg Peffley. With runners on first and second, Adam Gunston picked up his second hit of the day to load the bases for Colt Nealeigh. Nealeigh picked up his 45th RBI of the summer on a single off the third baseman’s glove, then Wood drove a single up the middle that gave Post 43 a 3-2 lead.

The team added two more in the eighth when Nealeigh was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Wood’s second hit. Ryan Lavy then stepped to the plate and promptly plastered a two-run double off the fence in right-center, giving Post 43 a three-run lead.

Relief specialist Michael Cookson then was called on close out the game.

Post 43 travels to Youngstown for the upcoming Connie Mack State Tourney, which begins today with a 5 p.m. game.

“We are playing pretty efficient baseball right now, on the mound, at bat and in the field,” Brown said. “I hope the kids continue playing like this all next week.”
