WASHINGTON, D.C. — On July 8-13, two Miami East-MVCTC FFA members, Casey Copeland and Olivia Edgell, attended the 2014 Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.

The conference focuses on training students how to be a positive influence in their chapters, schools and communities. Part of being an effective leader is strong communications skills, so the focus is also on communicating in various styles — informative, persuasive and appreciative.

Each day had a different theme, including: Citizenship, Me with a Purpose, We with Diversity, Doing through Advocacy and Serving Through Living a Legacy. Character and vision were also major focus areas. Attendees learned how good leaders have character and the conference helped them understand the components of character and how they can serve as role models to others. Participants had to come up with a plan to help better the community or make a change within their local community.

While in D.C., Copeland and Edgell completed service projects with their fellow FFA members. Additionally, they toured the nation’s capital, including Arlington National Cemetery, The Capitol and Holocaust Museum, and met FFA members from across the country. They met with Joseph Shultz, chief economist for the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, and U.S. Representative John Boehner’s assistant on agriculture to discuss the current issues taking place in the U.S. government and agriculture.

Copeland and Edgell traveled via airplane with several other schools from across Ohio. Helping pay for the trip was the Miami East FFA Alumni Chapter and the Miami Valley Career Technology Center. Copeland was the recipient of the Ohio Agri Women’s scholarship and Edgell was the recipient of the Ohio FFA Alumni scholarship.
