CASSTOWN — Todd Gentis loved his time as principal at Tri-Village.

But when the same position became available at Miami East High School, Gentis saw it as a chance to get a little closer to something else he loves dearly — his wife, Patty.

“Everything was going great (at Tri-Village), I had no reason to leave,” Gentis explained. “My wife has been a second-grade teacher at Miami East for 15 years, and when I was told of the opening, I just saw it as a chance to get myself in the same school district as my wife and make life a little easier.”

Gentis, his wife and daughter currently reside in Englewood, but he said they are looking at potentially planting some roots in Miami County in the future. Gentis has been all around southwest Ohio during his time in education. He has 17 years of experience in teaching, coaching, instruction, curriculum and administration — which, according to Miami East superintendent Dr. Todd Rappold, made Gentis the perfect fit for the job.

“Mr Gentis’s experience, knowledge and personality all made him a perfect fit for Miami East High School,” Rappold said. “He has been a hands-on principal and works well with the staff, students and parents at Miami East. He quickly returns phone calls and addresses concerns. He is visible in the hallways and eats lunch with the students every day.”

Gentis attained a bachelor of science degree in education from Wright State University in 1996. Three years later, in 1999, he received his master of science degree in education from the University of Dayton.

Gentis taught seventh- and eighth-grade science from 1996-1999 at Kiser Middle School in Dayton — where his eighth graders’ science proficiency scores were 30 percent higher than the district average. He also served on the technology committee at the school and was the building science coordinator/science fair director.

From there, he went on to become the fifth-grade science and language arts teacher at Brookville Intermediate School, his high school Alma mater, from 1999-2001, a role he would return to from 2007-2012. From 2001-2007, Gentis was the seventh grade science teacher at Brookville.

Some of his duties in the Brookville school system included serving on the District Teacher Evaluation Committee and being the first chairman of the Teachers for Outdoor Education Committee to oversee development of the school land lab. He also was the junior varsity girls basketball coach for two years, before taking the varsity job from 2010-2012. Aside from that, he was the high school boys tennis coach for seven years, and was the Northridge High School junior varsity boys coach from 2006-2008.

Seeking a new challenge, Gentis took his first principal job at Tri-Village Junior/Senior High School in 2012.

“I had been in the classroom for 16 years and I was to the point where I was ready for a new challenge and new opportunities,” he said. “I knew I never wanted to leave the education field, and I thought I had some good leadership qualities that I could offer.”

Rappold said he has been pleased with the amount of positive comments coming in about Gentis in his first year at East.

“We have heard numerous positive comments regarding his performance this year from parents and staff,” Rappold said.
