TROY — A wrong turn by University of North Alabama women’s soccer coach Chris Walker turned out all right for Morgan Brown.

Last spring, Brown — a senior girls soccer player at Troy High School — was competing in a soccer showcase with her club team, Cincinnati United Premier. Walker was at the tournament to scout other players, but by happenstance, ended up watching Brown play with her team.

What he saw impressed Walker enough to offer Brown a chance to play for the Lions, a Divison II program in the Gulf South Conference — an opportunity the Troy senior eagerly snatched up.

“We were playing in a tournament at Xavier University, and when you go to one of those things, they have field all over the place,” Brown said. “Their coach got lost when he was looking at another field and he ended up staying at that field and watching me play. I got an email from him after the tournament saying he had seen me by accident, but he wanted to offer me a chance to play there. That was in March of my junior year — I had never even heard of that school before that.”

Once she had the offer, Brown made a trip to the school — and immediately fell in love.

“When I came down for a visit and saw the campus, I absolutely loved it,” she said. “It’s only about eight and a half hours away, so it’s not too bad. I’m not worried about going away to school at all.

“The big thing they saw they want me to do is just make sure I stay in shape.”

While Brown’s discovery may have been by accident, Troy girls soccer coach Michael Rasey said Brown’s development as a soccer player most certainly has not been.

“She’s an incredible technician,” Rasey said of Brown, who earned second-team All-Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division honors last fall. “She’s a very tactical player. She really knows the game. She can play a multitude of positions, anywhere from outside midfielder to defender. She was a team captain for us this year, so she definitely shows good leadership.”
