DAYTON — David Fong has been named the 2017 receipient of the Ohio High School Athletic Association/Southwest District Media Award.
Fong is the group sports editor for the Troy Daily News, Piqua Daily Call and Sidney Daily News.
In 1991, the OHSAA initiated a program entitled the Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Program. One aspect of this program was to honor individuals who bring great recognition to our high schools, coaches and athletes through media’s various forms. Each of Ohio’s six athletic districts was asked to put a process in place to gather nominations of individuals who fit this special category.
Fong was one of two recepients of the award to be honored at halftime of a boys Division I district basketball tournament final Saturday at the University of Dayton Arena.
Fong began his career at the Troy Daily News working part-time as a high school student in the fall of 1991 and continued to work at the TDN through college at The Ohio State University. He began his full-time career at the Troy Daily News in December 1996. He has earned more than 60 awards from the Associated Press while working at the TDN and has covered numerous state tournaments.
Last year, Fong published a book, “Ohio’s Troy vs. Piqua Football Rivalry: The Battle on the Miami,” detailing the more than 100-year history of the Troy vs. Piqua football rivalry.
