MIAMI COUNTY — Come November, incumbent State Senator for the 5th District Bill Beagle will be challenged by Democrat Dee Gillis.
The fifth district covers Miami County, Preble County, and parts of Darke and Montgomery counties. Gillis won the party nomination in last night’s primary with 51.57 percent, or 5,540 votes, of the ballot, according to the Secretary of State. She ran against Joe Lacey of Dayton and Tom Matthew of Troy. In Miami County, according to unofficial Miami County Board of Elections results, Gillis pulled 54 percent, or 1,442 votes.
“That gives me some confidence heading into November,” Gillis said of the large percentage.
The former business owner and mayor from Tipp City said she wasn’t too nervous heading into election day.
“I said (to my group) we’ve done everything that we can do, I’ve made more phone calls than I ever though I’d make, now it will be what it will be,” Gillis said.
And for her, what it will be is a race in November.
Gillis expresses her thanks for the senate district party for selecting her to run. She is married to Kelly and has two children, Kelly Jr. of Dublin and Mary Smith of Troy, along with three granddaughters.
