Several Miami County couples came out Saturday morning to play the “Not-So-Newlywed” game.

After rounds of questions — and a close race — Bill and Carla Lohrer of Troy were named the 16th annual Troy Strawberry Festival Golden Couple at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center.

The 2013 Golden Couple, Bill and Connie Miller, officially passed the torch to the 2014 winners.

Troy Mayor Mike Beamish was the master of ceremonies for the event.

“I would like to thank everyone who attended today’s event in honor of these couples,” Beamish said.

Couples entering the Golden Couple competition must live in Miami County and be married for 50 or more years before June 2014. Seven couples — representing 391 total years of marriage — were entered into this year’s contest:

• Charless and Belva Black of Piqua, married Jan. 31, 1947

• Bill and Carla Lohrer of Troy, married June, 22, 1963

• Frank and Anita Neff of Tipp City, married on Aug. 27, 1960

• Dave and Carla Pinkerton of Troy, married July 13, 1963

• Lowell and Maxine Simes of Troy, married Oct. 26, 1949

• John and Linda Slonaker of Troy, married Aug. 24, 1963

• Bill and Ruth Ann Shafer of Covington, married Feb. 17, 1962. The Shafers couldn’t attend the event because of illness.

The contest was set up in the traditional format of the classic TV game show “The Newlywed Game.” The Lohrers, who accumulated the most points by answering questions correctly about their spouse, were crowned the winners.

Carla said she enjoys playing Bridge and reading, while Bill likes watching sports, reading and attending high school and college sports matches.

Besides reading, the couple also share in their love of spending time with their four grandchildren.

“We are honored to receive this award,” Carla said. “We have a deep love of the community and have enjoyed living in Troy for 41 years and raising our family here.”

The spirit award was given to Dave and Carol Pinkerton.

“We enjoy participating in community activities and would like to set an example for younger couples to build stronger marriages,” Carol said.

There were no losers in this contest, however, every couple received gift bags and plenty of applause from the crowd.

Katterhenry Investment Group sponsored the annual event.
