The Young Masters Art Exhibit may not showcase the work of artists like Pablo Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci or Bob Ross — but there will, however, be a variety of great work on display produced by talented local art students.

Troy-Hayner Cultural Center will host the Young Masters Art Exhibit, opening Jan. 10 and running through Feb. 23. This exhibit will showcase selected works completed by Troy students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

“We absolutely look forward to hosting this (exhibit),” said Nancy Hutchins, exhibit coordinator at Troy-Hayner Cultural Center. “It makes you realize just how talented Troy students are.”

The exhibit has been going on for the last 15 years, while it used to be held at the Troy-Miami County Public Library. Hutchins said the exhibit will feature around 300 pieces of art that are selected by teachers. All artwork being displayed was completed during this school year and includes examples of drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and mixed medium.

Hutchins said the teachers do the judging of the work, and select winners based on the best representation of all projects in each category.

The Hayner staff and the art teachers will be hosting a reception honoring students and their guests on Jan. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. The Troy school orchestra, conducted by Stephanie Cunningham, will be performing at the reception, and the public is invited to the reception.

The schools participating in this exhibit include all the Troy City elementary schools, Troy Junior High, Troy High School, Troy Christian Elementary, Troy Christian High School and St. Patrick’s Elementary School.

Hutchins said the plan is to start setting up the display Tuesday after school, but that, of course, depends on if the weather cooperates. She added they will make sure to have everything set up by Wednesday at the latest.

All events and exhibits are free and open to the public. The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center, 301 W. Main Street, is open from 9-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, 7-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday afternoons.
