TROY — With the 2014 winter Olympics opening up in Sochi, the Troy Skating Club and Hobart Arena are making a joint effort to get more local skaters out on the ice.
The TSC will hold its annual Great to Skate event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday evening. The event has been going on for about 10 years, and Troy Skating Club Director Trey Ehre said it will be a fun event open to people of all ages.
“It’s just a free event, where people can come skate. There’s a $1 skate rental fee. It’s an event that’s hosted by Hobart Arena and the Troy Skating Club, we give away some prizes, and we have free basic instruction for about 15 minutes,” Ehre said.
Ehre and coach Jeannie Drieling will provide brief basic skill instructions to open the event. Ehre said the rest of the session will be run like an open skate. Prizes will also be given away to some participants.
“It’s just a fun event where people can experience skating,” Ehre said. “It will be ran like an open skate. We just want to invite people of Troy to come and join us.”
