SIDNEY — John S. Frantz, president of Sidney Electric Company, Sidney, was recently recognized by the National Electrical Contracting Association (NECA) as the 2016 recipient of the Coggeshall Award. Frantz received the medal and award at the NECA annual convention in Boston on Oct. 10.
The award was established in 1956 and since that time has been presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the industry in the Technical and Training Service field. Frantz currently serves on the National Training Institute Advisory Committee for the Electrical Training Alliance as well as Governor for the Western Ohio Chapter of NECA. He served two terms on the IBEW-NECA Workforce Development Committee and over twenty years on the IBEW-NECA Joint Apprenticeship Committee in Lima. He was elected a member of the Academy of Electrical Contracting in 2011 and is a member of Electri-International, the research foundation for electrical contracting. Frantz also serves as a trustee for the 4th District Health Care Fund and on various other committees.
Frantz began his career at Sidney Electric Company after graduating from Purdue University, School of Construction Engineering and Management in 1979. During his undergraduate years he was employed as an intern with Sidney Electric Company starting in the warehouse.
Frantz managed many specialty projects and various unique installations that included work from a Xerox project in New York to an Anheuser Busch plant installation in Colorado with many interesting technological twists from early robotics to computer networking in its infancy. He became a co-owner of Sidney Electric in 1992 when he and John Carlisle purchased Sidney Electric, and later assumed full ownership of the company in 1996. Frantz has always enjoyed the technical side of the business as well as day to day opportunities and challenges.
Under his leadership the company has had significant growth and expanded services. Sidney Electric Company was founded by Herb Schlater in 1953. The company moved to its present Sidney location on Vandemark Road in 1971, with 28 employees. Today, Sidney Electric Company employs over 200 electrical journeymen, administrative and support staff. The company maintains offices in Sidney and Lima, Ohio as well as an office in Muncie, Indiana. Frantz operates two related businesses, ITS Group (Integrated Technology Systems Group) located in Lima, and Reliable Electrical Mechanical Services Inc., Troy.
Frantz is a member of the Lehman High School Foundation Board, Sidney Rotary Club and a committee member for Boy Scout Troop 95 of Sidney. Frantz also serves on the executive board of the Miami Valley Council of Boy Scouts. Additionally, Sidney Electric is the sole sponsor for the forty plus teams of the Sidney Electric Girls Softball League, which has been in existence since 1977.
