TROY, OHIO – The Mayflower this summer has piloted its first Theatre Arts Camp.

During the last three weeks, students ages 7-12 have collaborated and created all aspects of their very own theatrical production — from playwriting to promotion. Their production, “The Adventures of Fairy Tale Planet,” will be performed at 7 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Mayflower Arts Center. Students in the camp work together to acquire an overall understanding of playwriting, set and costume design and construction, performance, publicity and theatre management. In addition to learning the technical aspects of a theater production, students learn problem-solving, innovation, collaboration and time/resource management.

“I learned how to do lots of things that will help me in future plays. I liked making everything. I learned how to make props, listen to others, and how to be creative together,” said Ben Jones, 9.

The camps have been created and instructed by summer intern Jaclyn Kranenburg. Kranenburg, is currently earning her BFA in theater management from The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago, one of the nation’s top theatre conservatories.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and available at the door. The cast member meet and greet is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the studio.

The Mayflower Arts Center will also run a second round of Theatre Arts Camp for children ages 13 and older. The senior camp, which places a stronger emphasis on collaborative playwriting, runs Tuesday-Friday, from 1-5 p.m. for two weeks. The performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 16. Registration ends Monday at midnight. For pricing and more information, visit www.MayflowerArtsCenter.com.
