Antiques seminar upcoming

TROY — “Collecting Ephemera” is the topic of an antiques seminar on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center, 301 W. Main St.

The program is free and open to the public. Local Auctioneer Jerry Stichter will present the program about the paper items of value that may be hiding in people’s homes or collections. Most people are aware of autographs and first edition books, but Stichter offers insight into other items that may be overlooked. Advertising, letterhead stationary, trade cards and true photo postcards are just a few items of ephemera that will be discussed.

Classes being added at YMCA

MIAMI COUNTY — With school back in full swing sometimes families get involved in so many activities that they forget swim lessons are still going on at the YMCA.

“Swim lessons are going on all year round at both Miami County Y branches,” said Leia Lander, aquatics director at the Robinson branch. “Kids enjoy the pool and aquatic activities regardless of what time of year it is. To be safe around pools, teaching kids swimming is a great way to help them be safe, and create a fun healthy environment, no matter where they go to enjoy the water.”

The Piqua Branch is starting Friday morning preschool classes beginning with the Fall II session on Oct. 24. The classes are both the Pike and Eel level.

“The Pike and Eel level are the first classes that the kids are in the water without their parents so this is a new experience for them,” said Donn Shade, aquatics director at the Piqua Branch. “Not only are they learning swimming skills without Mom or Dad, but they are developing self confidence in their own abilities, and hopefully this will help them to grow more confident as a person.” The Pike class will be at 9:30 a.m. and the Eel at 10:15 a.m.

Registration for Fall II classes opens on Oct. 17 for Y members and Oct. 20 for non-Y members. The session runs Oct. 24 through Dec. 11.

PEEP classes upcoming

TROY — Keep your preschooler active this fall by registering them for hands-on, outdoor exploration with BNC’s Preschool Environmental Education Program (PEEP).

Each class will be filled with wildlife discovery as we share a story, make a craft, enjoy a snack, then take an exploratory hike. Fall II session runs Oct. 25 through Dec. 9. This nature-based preschool program for potty-trained 3-to-5 year-olds still has spots available on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. with an additional Friday afternoon class from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Sessions run for six weeks with a different nature-related topic explored each week. The fee is $45 for BNC members and $60 for non-members. All fees are due upon registration (cash or check only). Class size is limited to 12 children.

There will be a break for all classes the week of Thanksgiving.
