Open house set at Covington
COVINGTON — The Covington Elementary open house will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23,
Students will be able to visit their classrooms and meet their teachers before the first day of school. Children will be able to take home handbooks and forms that parents can read through and return to school the following week. Representatives from the PTO, the volunteer organization, school transportation, PLUS organization, and cafeteria will provide important information in the gymnasium. Fee payments will be accepted during the open house. New student registration will not take place during the open house. School staff will be on hand to answer any additional questions.
Butterfly art sought for exhibit
TROY — Get in touch with your creative side and help Brukner Nature Center celebrate the diverse butterflies found here in Ohio.
Watercolors, photography, doodle art, block prints, stamps, mixed media — let your imagination fly. There is no fee to enter this exhibit, but all works of art must be 8-inch-by-10-inch and fit into a standard glass-fronted frame (provided by BNC). All ages are encouraged.
All art must be submitted by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. Each of the 25 selected pieces will be paired with a $1 voting jar in the Heidelberg Auditorium and the People’s Choice Award will be announced at our Monarch Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 10. All art will be for sale for $20 (unframed – The frames are used year after year) and available for pick up after the exhibit. All proceeds support BNC’s Monarch Celebration and butterfly education.
Pesticide removal offered
TROY — The Ohio Department of Agriculture will be sponsoring a collection for farmers wishing to dispose of unwanted pesticides from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Miami County Fairgrounds, 650 N. County Road 25-A, Troy.
The pesticide collection and disposal service is free of charge, but only farm chemicals will be accepted. Paint, antifreeze, solvents, and household or non-farm pesticides will not be accepted.
Pesticide collections are sponsored by the department in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. To pre-register, or for more information, contact the Ohio Department of Agriculture at (614) 728-6987.
Art show entries needed
WEST MILTON — Hoffman United Methodist Church is looking for applicants to take part in the 10th annual art show Oct. 14-16 held in the activity center at 201 S. Main St., West Milton.
The deadline for entering is Sept. 28. The purpose of the show is to share area talent with the public. The show is non-juried. Some pieces may be available for purchase, with transactions handled directly between the artist and the interested party.
A gift from local arts patron Bill Netzley of Netzley Roofing has enabled Hoffman to offer monetary awards again this year. Awards to be given are $500 for first place, $400 for second place and $300 for third place. Eight additional awards of $100 each will also be presented.
Application forms may be picked up at the church office, Really Cool Stuff and The Hen’s Nest in West Milton. Also at The Hotel Gallery and Studio 14 in Tipp City. Forms are also available for downloading from the church website at www.hoffmanumc.org.
