TROY — Sixty years of marriage will be celebrated by the Rev. Allen and Carel Marheine of Troy on Aug. 7.
The Marheines were married on Aug. 7, 1954, in the Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Oshkosh, Wisc.
Following the Rev. Marheine’s ordination in 1956, he and Carol served a farm congregation northwest of Milwaukee and then they began a new church in Grafton, Wisc.
Arriving in Miami Country in 1963, the Marheines served St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Piqua into 1974 when they moved to Peace UCC Church in Detroit. Four years later, they returned as the Rev. Marheine was called to be executive direction of the chaplaincy program in the county’s three hospitals and Koester Pavilion. He became the senior pastor of Troy’s First United Church of Christ in 1984, retiring in 1996 and being named pastor emeritus in 1998. Carol and he are associate members of the First United Methodist Church in Troy.
A highlight of their retirement years had been working with Holland America Cruise Line where the Rev. Marheine served as Protestant chaplain on a number of cruises.
Their three children are Douglas of San Diego, Calif., Debrah Behrens of Southlake, Texas, and Rebecca Collings of Calhoun, Ky. Each child had two children, giving the Marheines six grandchildren.
