MIAMI COUNTY — Nearly 60 area people lost 94 pounds during the first week of the collaborative Pounds for Partners weight-loss program to promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Registrants have agreed to lose weight and use those efforts to raise funds for Health Partners Free Clinic, Miami County’s only free medical clinic.

Ryan and Amanda King, co-owners of the Can’t Stop Running Co. (CSRC), a Piqua-based walking and running specialty outlet, have agreed to join with Health Partners to bring awareness to healthy living.

“With approximately 60 people in the program, that’s better than a one pound per person average,” said Ryan King. Organizers hope the effort will encourage local citizens they serve, to participate.

On Jan. 16, a kickoff at the Piqua outlet resulted in 58 people registering to help raise funds for Health Partners. Since that time, more people have signed up to participate through late February. For every pound lost, $1 will be donated to the clinic.

Weekly weigh-ins are encouraged, but not required. The weigh-ins will be at CSRC on Saturdays during the program.

Officials will count any pounds lost from the last weigh-in throughout the program. Ryan King said weight may fluctuate up and down, but the results will be based on the cumulative amount lost.

CSRC will manage the weight loss calculations. As the event continues, participants will receive email notification of nutrition seminars to encourage healthier eating, according to King.

Participants who weigh-in at least twice will receive a $10 CSRC Gift Card at their second weigh in.

The program will conclude on Feb. 27 at the clinic, 1300 N. County Road 25-A, in Troy, with a final weigh-in between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Funds raised will go towards offsetting the Clinic’s operating expenses, according to Health Partners Executive Director Justin Coby.

“It was neat to see the people who came out (Jan. 16). There was a mixture of people who are participating for accountability and the opportunity to shed some weight. There were also some people who came in just to help support Health Partners,” said Ryan King.
