COLUMBUS — On Wednesday, Nov. 25 members of the Miami East-MVCTC and Milton-Union-MVCTC FFA chapters attended a tour of The Ohio State University in Columbus.
The visit was coordinated by the Miami East Career Success Program of Activities Committee chaired by freshman Lane Mergler.
The first stop of the day was a college student-led walking tour of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences campus. Buildings visited included majors in Animal Sciences, Food Science, Environmental and Natural Resources, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Business and Applied Economics, Agricultural Education, and more. During the tour the students learned that Ohio State was the home to the “Slow Moving Vehicle” sign used internationally for slow farm equipment on the roadways. Attendees also learned that the ice cream treat the Drumstick was improved at Ohio State as food scientists added the chocolate layer inside the cone so that the treat did not get soft as the ice cream melted.
After lunch, the next stop was a college student-led walking tour of the campus of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Students visited classrooms and laboratories of first, second, and third year students, including the veterinary hospital for companion animals, food animals, and equine patients. The attendees saw several animal patients before, during, and after surgery and learned the requirements of admission into the Veterinary Program. A final stop was a visit to Ohio Stadium to see where the nationally-rank football team plays and graduation ceremonies are held.
Attendees from Miami East included Aly Jordan, Emily Thimmes, Tyler Heckman, Taylor Frawley, Zach Kowalak, Keagan Carsey, Sidney Pelfrey, Brennon Green, Dakota Bashore, Tyler Bashore, Zach Kronenberger, Kyle Blair, Lane Mergler, Ashley Hawkins, Jessie Huffman, Kami Martin, Dawson Kingrey, and Agriculture Teacher Mrs. Marie Carity.
