4-H club enrollment deadline near

TROY — The countdown has begun to the Miami County 4-H club enrollment deadline, Friday, March 31.

The 4-H Youth Development Program is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. It is a non-formal educational program that provides learning experiences and opportunities for youth to reach their fullest potential.

All youth ages 5 and in kindergarten, through age 18 as of Jan. 1, 2017, can join 4-H. Cloverbud members are youth in kindergarten, first and second grade who participate in non-competitive activities and explore fun, hands-on interest areas. Youth ages 8 and in third grade enroll in individual projects. A project is a series of guided learning experiences provided in a 4-H project book format. Projects range from archery, bicycling, creative arts, photography, cake decorating, robotics, and scrapbooking to dog care, horses, money management, and rabbits. There are more than 200 projects from which to choose! For a complete list of available projects, check out 4-H Project Central at http://projectcentral.ohio4h.org/.

Youth can join 4-H at any time of the year but must be enrolled by Friday, March 31, in order to take advantage of the many opportunities that are available — including participating in Junior Fair activities at the Miami County Fair.

Last year, nearly 800 young people throughout Miami County participated in 43 4-H clubs led by 150 adult volunteers. Some clubs focus on a specific project area, such as horses or dogs, while others have a more general focus and include many different project areas. To locate a club near you, visit the Ohio State University Extension, Miami County website at miami.osu.edu, or call (937) 440-3945.

The Miami County 4-H Program offers two summer camp opportunities at Indian Hills 4-H Camp. Cloverbud Day Camp will be June 9. It is a day camp for children ages 5 and in Kindergarten through second grade. Junior Camp will be June 12-16. It is a five-day, four-night overnight camp for youth ages 8 and in third grade through age 13. Ages are as of Jan. 1 of the current year. Youth do not have to be in 4-H yet to attend camp.
