NEWBERRY TOWNSHIP — A Sidney man was babysitting three children when he reportedly overdosed on heroin last weekend.

The mother of the children arrived home on the 7500 block of Versailles Road on Sunday at approximately 4 p.m. to the children telling her that they thought Ashley T. Hughes, 31, had overdosed. According to Miami County Municipal Court records, the mother called 911 after finding Hughes unresponsive with a shoelace and a rag hanging on his arm. She administered CPR until Miami County Sheriff’s deputies arrived.

Miami County Sheriff’s deputies administered four doses of Narcan on Hughes as a Covington EMS squad arrived on scene. Covington EMS squad members administered more Narcan through an IV. Hughes was then transported to the Upper Valley Medical Center, where he stayed overnight.

According to court records, a clear bag containing seven empty capsules was lying next to Hughes during the incident. Hughes was also reportedly holding an uncapped syringe. Inside of a nearby cigarette box, deputies reportedly found another bag of four clear capsules containing suspected heroin. The three children, whose ages were 13, 12, and 8, had access to the unlocked room where they found Hughes unresponsive.

Hughes was charged with three counts of first-degree misdemeanor child endangering in addition to fifth-degree felony possession of drugs, second-degree misdemeanor possession of a drug abuse instrument, and fourth-degree possession of drug paraphernalia in connection with this incident.

Hughes was booked into the Miami County Jail on Monday and arraigned on those charges on Tuesday. Hughes is currently being held at the jail on a total of $14,600 bond.
