MIAMI COUNTY — What started with a radish soon blossomed into a competitive drive and love of the Miami County Fair for Terina Casanova of West Milton, this year’s recipient of the Homemaker of the Year award.

“I’m still speechless,” Casanova said.

This was Casanova’s second year entering the Miami County Fair, and she made it count. In addition to winning the Homemaker of the Year award, Casanova received the Golden Trowel award, the Miami County Fair Strawberry Day Best of Show award, five Best of Show awards, and approximately 56 ribbons overall.

“I was on a mission this year,” Casanova said. Casanova had over 90 entries in the 2015 Miami County Fair. She originally put in for 127 entries, but she ran out of time.

“I got bit by the bug last year,” Casanova said. “I love it. I think I’m going to be around for a long time.” Casanova explained that last year she grew a radish that was so large that she wondered about entering it in the Miami County Fair. The radish did not win any ribbons, but Casanova soon had 31 entries and won 17 ribbons in last year’s Miami County Fair.

“It was nothing I was expecting,” Casanova said about her numerous awards in this year’s fair. For Casanova’s Best of Show award, she placed three times in the Horticulture Hall for her scarecrow and for two of her herb gardens. She also placed twice in the Art Hall for her pineapple cake and apple pie.

“Everything is homemade from scratch because I have five apple trees,” Casanova said. “So it’s my very own recipe, my very own apples out my own backyard. So it makes it even more special to me.”

Casanova explained that she worked diligently in the weeks leading up to the Miami County Fair, operating on three to four hours of sleep each night during the week right before the fair.

“The last three weeks, it’s been non-stop,” Casanova said. “I’m happy.”

Casanova’s drive stems not so much from a desire to win, but moreso from a desire to create.

“It’s so much fun,” Casanova said. For Casanova, it was an overwhelming feeling for her to be able to grow her own vegetables, see them win a ribbon, and say, “That came from my garden.”

“It’s so cool,” Casanova went on. “That’s my biggest thing since I started gardening in the last three years. I really enjoy it.”

Casanova was also thankful for the support she received and felt through her endeavors.

“I was very blessed, and I’m very thankful to God,” Casanova said. “My mom’s behind me 100 percent.”
