MIAMI COUNTY — Early voting in Ohio began Wednesday for the Nov. 8 Presidential Election, and the Miami County Board of Elections met Thursday afternoon to receive an update on it as well as minor compliance issues.
The Miami County Board of Elections had received 9,709 requests for absentee ballots or in-office early voting ballots by Thursday, and 334 of those votes were cast Wednesday.
The board also discussed a directive from the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office regarding paper ballots that need to be available at polling locations on Nov. 8.
“By directive, we do have to revisit the ballot quantities,” Deputy Director Eric Morgan said.
The new directive called for a 20 percent increase of paper ballot quantities when it was previously 5 percent. The board’s office already planned enough additional paper ballots for the majority of the precincts, but there were a handful that needed extra. The board approved the extra amount of paper ballots to be purchased, and the increase was around 740 additional paper ballots.
The board also discussed a letter received from the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office in regard to the polling locations being compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). There were minor issues that will need to be addressed, including propping doors open on Nov. 8, and adjusting table heights. The board will also need to purchase handicapped-accessible signs.
Board member Jose Lopez suggested that they go over the polling locations after the election to assess whether or not they need to move polling locations to make sure that they are all handicapped-accessible.
The board decided to meet again in two weeks to receive another update on early voting.
“You’re going to have as many people vote in this election as we ever have,” Lopez said.
“We’ll be very, very busy,” chairman Kelly Gillis said.
