TROY — Troy Police Department charged one woman with child endangering and abusing harmful intoxicants after she left her son with a customer inside the Walgreen’s store to get high in the bathroom.

According to reports, Courtney Whitmore, 22, of Troy, was found inside the bathroom at the store around 7 p.m. Monday. Whitmore refused to open the door for authorities. Authorities were also alerted to her having a young child with her in the store who was being cared for by a customer.

Whitmore eventually opened the door and came out of the stall and the officer did not locate anything for her to inhale on her. Troy Fire had arrived on scene and asked if she wanted to go to the hospital and she said no. She then stated that she had to go to the bathroom again. She went back into the stall and closed the door.

Whitmore’s mother arrived on scene and went to the stall door along with Troy Fire, who had some paperwork for her to sign. Officers were outside the bathroom when Whitmore’s mother came out of the bathroom and said that Courtney had something up to her mouth. Troy Fire medics also said that she had something and could hear her inhaling it. The Troy Police Department officer then kicked in the stall door. Whitmore passed out and fell to the bathroom floor. A can of compressed gas duster was found in the leg of her pants.

Troy Fire transported Whitmore to Upper Valley Medical Center for treatment. Courtney’s child was released to her mother. Whitmore was charged with Abusing Harmful Intoxicants as well as Child Endangering. She will be arraigned on Oct. 11.
