TIPP CITY — The Tipp City board of education is once again considering its options for the football stadium, seeking a partnership with the city to determine how best to move forward.
At their meeting Monday night, the board approved a shared contract with the city for athletic complex master planning services. Ruetschle Architects, which has been working with the district for several years, will perform the $20,000 planning work. Board member Theresa Dunaway voted no.
Board members have met with city council representatives to discuss the stadium, which is owned by the city and leased to the schools. The city will still need to approve the contract and will discuss it at an upcoming meeting.
“It would help us really look at the potential of the stadium, what it would cost,” Superintendent Dr. Gretta Kumpf said. “That would be a shared expense between us and the City of Tipp City.”
The school board has discussed updates to the stadium several times in recent years, going so far as to put a bond issue on the ballot in March 2016. The issue was withdrawn by the newly elected board in January. The board said a more detailed project proposal — including a location for the stadium — needed to be decided on before going to the voters.
“We keep throwing numbers around and until we have real numbers, we can’t talk to the community intelligently about it. Which is what I said when we pulled it off,” board member Sam Spano said.”I didn’t feel comfortable with just throwing a number out there and going after a levy. I want some hard numbers we can actually stand behind.”
The board has talked about whether or not to move the football stadium from its current location in City Park to district-owned land near the high school.
“We’re trying to get a solid number … so we can see if it’s even feasible to do at City Park,” board president Carla Frame said
The contract was not bid because it is under $25,000, and because architectural services are not legally required to be bid out, school officials said. The district has been using Ruetschle Architects for design services since the company was selected from a group of applicants for a request for services several years ago.
