TIPP CITY — Fall weather made an appearance just in time for the 58th annual Tipp City Mum Festival, and the good weather made for big crowds this year.

“It’s perfect weather,” festival president Corey Rismiller said. “We had a great turnout for the car show and no issues with the parade.”

Friday night’s cruise-in was a big success, festival vice president Dave Bechtol added.

“They were turning people away,” he said. Organizers estimated that there were more than 800 cars on display from First Street to Hyatt Street.

On Saturday morning, crowds lined up under overcast skies for the biggest festival parade in years, Bechtol said.

The parade featured bands from Bethel, Miami East, Wayne, and Tippecanoe High Schools, as well as clowns, horses and vintage cars.

This year’s festival theme, “Revving Up the Mums,” was apparent in several of the motorcycle-themed parade floats and entries.

As the 2017 festival president, Bechtol will choose the next theme. Bechtol, who is a veteran, hinted that next year’s festival will honor first responders and the military.

Following the parade, the crowds made their way to City Park for food, shopping, and entertainment.

“This is a great turnout so far,” Rismiller said.

As they walked around the festival grounds, the Mum Queen and court posed for pictures with younger festival-goers.

“That’s the best part of the festival,” Mum Queen Rachel Martin said of the children she’d met during the festival. “It makes them happy to see us and I’m happy to see them so excited.”
