MIAMI COUNTY — A social media threat forced the closing of both the Piqua and Robinson Branches of the Miami County YMCA on Monday afternoon.

Jim McMaken, director of the Miami County YMCA said, “About 2:30-ish, we received a threat on our social media site, our Facebook page, that there would be a bomb that would go off at the YMCA.

“Our aquatics director at the Robinson Branch saw it on Facebook,” McMaken said, “We spoke briefly and then contacted the authorities, then evacuated the facilities by our emergency procedure policy.”

The threat did not specify a particular branch.

Piqua police responded to the Piqua Branch and Miami County Sheriff’s Deputies to the Robinson Branch.

“We’ve been through every square inch of the facilities, including all of the lockers and it appears to be clear,” McMaken said.

“At the time of the threat, we had approximately 75 to 80 people in the building (Piqua Branch),” McMaken went on, “And probably close to that in the Robinson Branch, maybe a few more.”

McMaken said, “All in all it was a pretty calm mass exodus out of the building.” The director estimated the entire evacuation took around five minutes.

Deputy Chief Marty Grove of the Piqua Police Department praised YMCA staff and members for the quick and orderly evacuation.

“The complex here (in Piqua) compliments the fact that they have two out-buildings they can take the kids to,” Grove said, “Their procedures and policies worked out great.”

Both branches intend to re-open yet this evening. McMaken said that an announcement will be made on the Miami County YMCA Facebook page.
