MIAMI COUNTY — Kassidy Thompson, 16, of Troy, collected a lot of hardware over the weekend at the Miami County Fair.
Thompson showed her market steer, Cash, winning Grand Champion Junior Market Steer on Monday evening.
Thompson also won the open class market steer category and was named the best of the best in market beef showmanship over the weekend.
“We got him in December … he was the best one in the group,” she said Monday evening. “My favorite thing about showing steers — I just like it. Everything about it. I like working with them and showing off the hard work and getting recognized for it.”
And that’s just in the market steer category. Thompson also exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion commercial ewe Monday morning, participated in showmanship and showed her market barrow.
Thompson shared how she wakes up each morning before the sun rises to work with her 4-H projects.
“I like getting the experience and what you learn from it,” she said. “I worked really hard with (Cash) every day and it just shows how much work you put in to it.”
All those hours spent in the barn and all those miles to exercise the 4-H livestock paid off for the junior at Milton-Union High School.
“I get up before the sun comes up. I rinse and then we go out and work with a show stick on them,” she said. “Then, with the sheep, we rinse and walk them and work on bracing them every day and the pigs we just walk every day.”
Thompson is a fourth generation beef exhibitor at the Miami County Fair. She is a member of the Union Township Meat Producers. She is the daughter of Dave and Tammy Thompson of Troy.
Savannah Holzen, 14, of Troy, exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer. She is a member of the Elizabeth Livestock 4-H Club.
“I’m really excited. I worked all year for this, so it was fun,” said Holzen after the show ended.
Both Thompson and Holzen will be part of the annual Miami County Fair Sale of Champions.
The Sale of Champions begins at 7 p.m. at the swine barn on Wednesday. The Junior Market sale begins at 9 a.m. Thursday. The sale order is as follows: market barrows, single market lambs, market goats, dairy steer, beef feeder calf, market steer/heifer, single market rabbits, pen of market rabbits, pen of market chickens, single market duck and market turkey.
