TROY — The Troy High School music department has had a very successful year, as they do every year. The band, choir and orchestra put on phenomenal performances and the marching band, yet again, qualified for the OMEA State Marching Band Finals. The students involved worked hard to do their best and represent themselves and the school as great. Such excellence was lead by the seniors, and awards throughout the music department were given out at the final concerts for band and orchestra.

Courtney Carmack, tuba and sousaphone player for the band, was the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award. The award is given to students who are recognized by their band directors for superior musicianship, dependability, loyalty and cooperation.

Carmack said, “I was very surprised. I had my suspicions about it being someone else and I definitely wasn’t expecting to be the one selected. I’m very flattered and humble.

Brandon Blier, trumpet player, was the senior selected for the Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence, an award given out by the Marine Corps upon recommendation by a band director.

“I was honored to be chosen for the award,” Blier said. “I was really surprised that it was me and not someone else.”

Brett Galey, trombone player, was selected to receive the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for his musical achievement and dedication to the Troy High School Jazz Band. Galey is the only senior that has participated in jazz band all four years of his high school career.

“I was pretty happy about it, but I was expecting it,” he admitted.

In addition to band awards, the Troy High School Orchestra also gives out an award. Each year, underclassmen vote on who they wish to receive the National Student Orchestra Award. This year, violist Shannon Cothran was selected.

“I was very humbled and flattered upon receiving the award. There were other seniors that I could see getting it and I was grateful when I was the one named.”
