Alleged rape suspect released from jail

PIQUA — Troy resident John Allan Brannum, 18, spent the night in jail before being released on his own recognizance after he was arraigned Friday morning for first-degree felony rape.

Brannum was first charged on Thursday, when he was taken into custody at Troy High School. According to Piqua Chief of Police Bruce Jamison, the case began on May 13. According to court records, Brannum is accused of having non-consensual sex with the female victim, who is 14 years old.

The alleged incident took place at a private residence in Piqua. The victim was also reportedly an acquaintance of Brannum’s. According to court records, Brannum and the victim each provided differing details about the extent of their relationship. Brannum also reportedly denied that the sexual conduct was forced.

Brannum is facing a maximum sentence of up to 11 years in prison and a maximum fine of $20,000.

A preliminary hearing for Brannum is scheduled for May 25. Brannum was ordered not to have any contact with the victim.
