TROY — Helping kids become better learners, that’s the mission of the instructors at A+ Tutoring.
A+ Tutoring is a group of licensed teachers who offer private tutoring designed specifically for each student. The business recently celebrated the opening of a new location in Troy.
“Our main focus is just one-on-one and two-on-one private, customized tutoring,” owner Joy Hules said. “This is what I’m passionate about, helping kids one-on-one.”
Hules taught in the classroom for more than 10 years, but got into private tutoring to provide students with more focused assistance. She opened a private tutoring business out of her home last year, but the business outgrew the space. The new center is located at 310 S. Dorset Rd. in Troy.
She enjoyed teaching, but made the switch because she loved working with students individually.
“The classroom is fun and great, and I love teaching and helping kids. But it’s just really neat to work with them one-on-one, because you can spend the time and actually get in there and really help them,” Hules explained. “You get to see those “a-ha moments” where the child lights up like, ‘Oh, I get it!’”
A+ Tutoring works with children in the pre-kindergarten age group all the way through grade 12, Hules said. The tutors can help with any subject from reading to mathematics and more.
The A+ Tutoring team, which consists of two tutors and an intervention specialist, looks at each child’s needs and learning style and plans accordingly.
“Our specialty is getting in and looking at each child’s learning style, seeing if they’re more kinesthetic, more musical,” Hules explained. “What makes them tick? What makes them learn?”
They offer free consultations, so students and parents can meet with the tutor and find the right program, as well as homework help, assessments, and private sessions that are customized to a student’s needs.
A+ Tutoring is offering some special programs for the summer as well, including a non-reader to reader program and back-to-school readiness.
They also plan to open a learning center in the fall where students can walk in and get homework help, Hules said.
The center is currently open from 3-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
