Troy-Piqua blood drives set for rival week

MIAMI COUNTY — Troy-Piqua rivalry week will take on some extra arm-wrestling this year with all four blood drives in the 19th annual US Bank/Community Blood Center Troy-Piqua Challenge taking place within the final three days before the Troy vs. Piqua football game on Friday, Oct. 28.

This year both high schools will hold student blood drives on the same day, Tuesday, Oct. 25 with the same hours, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. To further intensify the 2016 competition both US Bank community blood drives will be on the same day, Thursday, Oct. 27 with the same hours, noon to 6 p.m.

Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment online at www.DonorTime.com or call 1-800-388-GIVE.

The 2016 game will be the 132nd renewal of the Troy-Piqua football rivalry, one of the oldest in Ohio. The Troy-Piqua Challenge has become another traditional throw-down for community bragging rights. Donor support for the blood drives decides who takes ownership of the Challenge Blood Drive trophy and which school will receive a $1,000 award from US Bank.

The prize goes to the community whose high school and community blood drives combine for the highest number of donor registrations. Eligible students who miss their high school blood drive can register to donate and vote for their school at the US Bank community blood drives. Community members can register to donate at either US Bank blood drive and mark their ballot for the school of their choice.

The trophy currently resides at Troy High School after the Trojans rallied last year to win the Challenge by 34 votes.

In 2015, the two high school blood drives and two US Bank community blood drives combined for a total of 376 registrations, including 138 first-time donors and 300 units of blood donated.

Piqua leads Troy in the CBC/US Bank Troy-Piqua Challenge Blood Drive series 13-4-1. The Challenge began with a Troy victory in 1998, and was followed by a string of 12 Piqua victories (broken only by a tie in 2001). But Troy has turned the tide by winning the challenge three out of the last four years.

The Challenge winner will be announced and the $1,000 award check presented Friday, Oct. 28 before kick-off at the Troy-Piqua football game.
