CASSTOWN —It took Trina Current four years to get close to the mountaintop.
It took her a few seconds Thursday night to shoot past it.
Trina Current’s first two points of Thursday’s Cross County Conference game against Franklin Monroe gave her 1,000 points in her illustrious career in Miami East’s 95-18 romp over the Jets.
With her 12 points, she was just one of six Vikings (5-1, 3-0 CCC) in double digits Thursday, a testament to the balance the program has had during her career and beyond.
“Trina is one of six girls in Miami East girls basketball history to score 1,000 points,” Miami East coach Preston Elifritz said. “I’ve been coaching in the system for the past 10 years, and during that time she’s only the second girl to reach 1,000. We’ve just had a lot of good players come through here with the ability to score.
“This is very well-deserved for her. She’s the type of player that every coach dreams of. She’s been here for four years, she’s a hard worker, she’s 6-foot-1 and can move her feet, she can run the floor and she never stops. She’s every coach’s dream player.”
Renee DeFord led the Vikings with 16 points on the night, Samantha Skidmore had 13, Trina Current had 12 and Ashley Current, Angie Mack and Emily Kindell had 10 apiece.
“We had 41 field goals tonight and 26 assists,” Elifritz said. “We were able to play all 13 girls, 10 of them scored and six were in double figures. All in all, it was a pretty complete game for us.”
Miami East hosts Newton Saturday.
