CARLISLE — The Tippecanoe Red Devils wrestling team split a tri-match at Carlisle Wednesday, beating National Trail 42-21 and then falling to host Carlisle 45-18.

Gabe Callicoat (152) and Mitchell Poynter (138) both went 2-0 for Tippecanoe, with Austin Robbins (170), Jordan Brown (126), Joey Flora (132), Jack Peura (152) and Ryan Bolton (285) picking up wins against National Trail and Eric Seeman scoring a win against Carlisle.

“We gave up a couple of key forfeits (against National Trail), and we’re missing a couple of key wrestlers,” Tippecanoe coach Jordan Krebs said. “I was really proud of Joey and Ryan for getting their first varsity wins — especially Ryan. It’s a huge undertaking to ask a freshman to wrestle heavyweight. It was good to see him come off the mat all smiles. Glad to have Austin and Gabe back in the lineup, because their leadership on and off the mat tonight was key.

“Carlisle is a tough squad top to bottom, and our youth showed. Our guys have to take quality shots and score from the bottom — and learn to do it against high-caliber opponents.”

Tippecanoe hosts Brookville, Coldwater and Greenville tonight for a super-tri.
